Remember the 10

January 24, 2011 — 1 Comment

It was a normal January day.  I was in my 3rd year of college and living in a house on Cantwell with David Irons, Brian Hake and Greg BloydOkState was  playing Colorado in Boulder that night.  The game wasn’t televised, but it was on the radio.  I loved listening to Bill Teegins do the play-by-play. We lost the game that night by 10, but that wasn’t all we lost.

The local news was reporting that one of the planes had not returned to Stillwater yet.  My roommates and I were glued to the television.  Just waiting to hear something.  After about an hour had gone by they had told us that the plane that didn’t return had crashed.  There was no report on survivors or dead and no report of names of the people.  It wasn’t until a lot later that night that they reported who had died in the crash.

I knew the names of all of them, but 2 of them I knew better than the others. Nate Fleming was an Edmond boy like me.  He was a walk-on and well liked.  Anytime we were up by a lot we would start chanting “Nate, Nate, Nate”, we wanted him to get in the game so bad.  I sat next to Nate in a History class the semester before.  He was well liked and really funny.  I would think back to days in class and remember sitting next to him.

The other name that really affected me was Jared Weiberg.  I had met Jared the summer before at basketball camp at Oklahoma Christian University.  Jared was a former walk-on who this school year was a trainer.  He wanted to be a head coach like his dad.  He was smart and he knew the game very well.  The semester before and leading up to the plane crash I would be on my way to class at the same time T-TH and would run into Jared getting out of his car heading to the bball offices.  We would talk for about 3-5 minutes and then I would head on to class.  I never thought those conversations would end like they did.  He loved talking bball and would talk to anybody.  I went to his memorial service in Tonkawa at NOC.  It was in the gym.  It was only fitting for Jared.  The place was standing room only.  He touched so many lives, including mine.  I will always remember Jared and the little time I spent with him.  He would have made a great coach.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years.  It seems like yesterday in so many ways.  I will always remember, and I have never been more proud to be a Cowboy. We will always remember the 10.

PGs and Leadership

Can you win without a great point guard, but good floor leadership? Can you win with a great PG, but no leadership? If you have a great PG then you probably have good leadership. If you have a terrible point guard then you probably don’t have very good floor leadership.

If you want to have a good team you need a solid point guard and a coach on the floor, which hopefully is the same person in my opinion.

If your team is average look at your PG first. That is most likely why your team is not in the Top 25 or so.

Now What?

College football is over for at least a few months. Of course recruiting is heating up and national signing day is just under 3 weeks away. Spring practice and scrimmages will begin. Okay, so maybe college football is over for the normal fans. But for people like me who follow college football and basketball year round the next few months are just as fun as the season. Where will the uncommitted players sign? Who will have the best spring? Who will have a QB battle? These are all questions we have and are excited to see answered in the next few months.

But what about you fans who only watch the games and don’t really care about all the other stuff? Well, for starters you could give college basketball a try. Believe it or not college basketball officially started way back in October when teams could legally begin practicing. Conference play has begun and things are heating up in the college basketball world. March Madness is just around the corner. Start by checking out a game tonight. Seven ranked teams play and two of them are playing each other.

College football season might be over, but college basketball season has just begun for the normal fan. Check your local listings and find a game to watch tonight. Odds are you won’t be disappointed.

We have been hearing a lot about Jim Valvano this past week.

Here is the speech he gave at the ESPY Awards in 1993.  This was just a couple of months before he passed away.  It’s such a great speech.  Enjoy.

Have you ever used Groupon?

Groupon is a service that finds great deals in your area.  My friend, Kevin, posted about the Sooners of Oklahoma using Groupon to sell tickets. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but I personally don’t use Groupon. I receive the deals in my email, but have not found anything worth while. I have heard both negative and positive things about Groupon.

Here are two tweets Kevin sent out. The second one has a picture of the deal.

That #OU is having to use Groupon to sell bball tickets validates the argument that there are very few OU fans, only OU football fans.less than a minute ago via HootSuite

@TheBigLead even more amazing (not really) is that OU basketball is so bad they are using Groupon to sell tix: http://yfrog.com/h4c61jless than a minute ago via Osfoora for iPhone

I’m not sure where I stand on the thought of this. Yes, OU basketball is low on the totem pole for OU fans. Most OU fans have really only cared about basketball maybe 7 seasons in the last 25.

I can see why OU would do this. Nobody attends their games. They need people to show up to their games. Is it worth selling out to a coupon service when you probably could have done this deal on your own? Use the tools you have with social media and you could have done this same deal on your own. Now it looks like Groupon is bailing them out.

I would really like to see the results from this. Maybe, I’m totally wrong and it will work in OU’s favor, but I highly doubt it.

Strengths Finder 2.0

Finding my strengths and getting better at them

I had an interview yesterday with a company that I very much would like to work for.  Everything they do screams who I am and what I enjoy in work.

When the interview was over they gave me this book.  I read the first 30 pages or so and then went online to take my assessment. Before I even took the 30 minute test I kind of had an idea of what a couple of my top 5 strengths would be.

To take the test you have to have the book.  There is a code in the book that you have to type in to have access to the assessment.  The test was 177 questions and I had 20 seconds to answer each question.

These are my top 5 in order.

  • Ideation
  • Adaptability
  • Belief
  • Responsibility
  • Includer
  • I haven’t had a chance yet to read about each one, but I am looking forward to creating my action plan to play into these strengths.  I’m looking forward to putting these into action and seeing what they look like in my life.  Now that I know what my strengths are I’m very excited to start using them to my advantage.

If you have ever taken the assessment I would love to hear what your strengths are, and how you are using them to your advantage.

    Online “friends”

    November 3, 2010 — Leave a comment

We all have way more friends online than we do in real life. The internet has done this to us. Is it good or bad? I don’t know yet.

We have friends online from high school that we haven’t talked to in years and maybe even decades depending how old you are.

We have friends from college that we probably haven’t talked to in since 2002.

We have friends from our previous jobs.  Some of them we still talk to, some we have de-friended, some we were never friends with.

We have all of these friends that we keep on facebook but for what reason.  To be honest there are easily 100 “friends” I have on facebook that I will probably never talk to again, yet I still like to know what is going on in their lives because we were friends.  I will also admit that I have hidden about 400 “friends” on facebook.  Yes, you can do this.  They don’t come up in your stream.  It’s great.  I have hidden them for many different reasons.

So, I ask myself, “Why do I keep these friends?”  To be honest I’m not a 100% sure.  Maybe I don’t want to hurt their feelings, maybe I think one day we will be friends again or maybe it’s my own ego problem and I want it to look like I have hundreds and hundreds of friends.

What are your thoughts on facebook “friends”?
